Job Title: Science Educator
Reports to: Assistant Director, Programs
Job Status: Part-time (approx. 15-20 hrs/week)
Classification: Non-exempt, not benefits eligible
Pay rate: $18/hr+
Job Summary
Science Educators play a key role in bringing The Health Museum’s mission to life for our guests. The primary role of a science educator is to deliver quality programming, which includes but is not limited to the Museum’s School Programs for pre-K through post-secondary students. Developed to promote understanding, curiosity, and career awareness, these onsite, offsite and virtual programs complement the exhibit experience. Program formats include hands-on activities, organ dissections, and experiences in the DeBakey Cell Lab.
This is an onsite position that requires some local travel and occasional evening and weekend hours.
Job Responsibilities
- Facilitate interactive and/or inquiry-based classroom curriculum and activities for students in pre-K through post-secondary classes.
- Conduct off-site workshops and outreach at various partner schools throughout Greater Houston.
- Lead hands-on activities for children and families for special events, health fairs or public programs.
- Conduct independent study as needed to expand content knowledge relevant to Museum programs.
- Collaborate in the development of activities, scavenger hunts, and events for a variety of audiences.
- Meet and greet school and teacher groups.
- Leading the exhibit tours for school groups
- Assist with the functioning of the Learning Center as a public, educational space including ability to work all audio-visual equipment.
- Order, organize, and inventory program supplies.
- Maintain an orderly shared work area.
- Perform other tasks that pertain to the program responsibilities, as assigned by the Assistant Director of Programs.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest in Museum’s mission
- Interest in current science and health developments
- Coursework in science, health, or science education required; degree in science, health or education preferred
- Willing to expand content knowledge and learn best practices in informal learning
- Teaching or performance experience a plus
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
- Experience working in teams
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work with minimal supervision
- Strong time management skills
- High level of guest service, enthusiasm, and initiative
- Ability to work with diverse audiences
- Positive attitude and interaction style
