LEARNING MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is learning to pay attention to the present moment with an openness, curiosity and kindness. It is something that we do naturally. Most often, however, we are caught in habit energy where we are thinking about events of the past or future or caught in judging the present, taking us out of our experience. Over the last 25 years, mindfulness practices have been studied widely in America and shown to reduce stress, lessen suffering from anxiety, depression and physical pain, boost the immune system, improve our sense of well-being, and actually change the structure and function of the brain. Come join Dr. Ann Friedman, a psychologist and certified mindfulness instructor, to learn more about mindfulness.

Learn how to focus your attention and let go of stressful thoughts and emotions.
You will learn a specific way of paying attention to your breath, body, thoughts, feelings and to the world around you. The way of paying attention is powerful because when you can observe your thoughts and feelings, then you can choose how you act. You can also learn how to bring relaxation to your body when you are feeling stress and anxiety.

Ann Friedman, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist who served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston Counseling Psychology Graduate Program for over ten years. Ann holds both a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston. She completed her Residency in Clinical Psychology at U.T. Medical School and her Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at Baylor College of Medicine.

For the last nine years, Ann has studied mindfulness intensively with various national teachers. In 2015, she received a Certification in Mindfulness Facilitation from the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine at UCLA. Ann currently teaches mindfulness at Rothko Chapel, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science, Congregation Emanu El, United Orthodox Synagogues, Congregation Beth Yeshurun and Congregation Sh’ma Koleinu.
